The less-than-a-meter-long Lesothosaurus is the smallest full-grown dinosaur fossil found to date, only about the size of a chicken. So now, when someone asks me what some meat tastes like, instead of saying “tastes like chicken.” I say “tastes like Lesothosaurus.” I rarely get invited back to dinner.

The dinosaur with the longest name was Micropachycephalosaurus meaning “tiny thick-headed lizard”. Its fossils have been found in China, and it was named in 1978 by the Chinese palaeontologist Dong!

  3. Anna

T-Rex’s head was about 5 feet long. Its skull had holes in it which made it lighter and easier to carry around.

  4. Tara S.

The triceratops had a skull capable of changing in shape throughout its life – which leads paleontologists to believe that the triceratops wasn’t actually its own species of dinosaur. Triceratops were, instead, a juvenile form of the Torosaurus family.

    Dinosaurs are birds!

  6. margaux verdera

Dinosaurs scare me. True. Science. Fact.
But seriously, I found this out and was impressed, the Stegosaurus had a brain the size of a walnut

  7. Emily Lucas

Found in China, the dinosaur with the longest name was Micropachycephalosaurus meaning “tiny thick-headed lizard”.

Diplodocid only had teeth in the front of the mouth, and looked like pencils or pegs. They probably used their teeth to crop off food, without chewing, and relied on gastroliths (gizzard stones) to break down tough plants (similar to modern birds).

  9. Diana

Teeny tiny dinosaurs! There was one that was only 4 inches tall & weighed less than 2 lbs called Fruitadens Haagororum! Cute!

  10. Brian Lucas

Scientists think that one of the smartest dinosaurs was “Troodon.” It hunted, was about 3.3 feet long, had stereoscopic vision, grasping hands and had a brain size similar to that of a modern mammal or bird.

  11. ENRIQUE MENDOZA

The first dinosaur fossil found in the US was a thigh bone found by Dr. Caspar Wistar, in Gloucester County, New Jersey, in 1787.

  12. Dea Houser

The heaviest dinosaur was the Brachiosaurus weighing in at 80 tons which is equivalent to 17 African Elephants!! The Brachiosaurus was 53 feet tall and 85 feet long. It is the largest dinosaur skeleton to be mounted in a museum.

  13. Emily Lucas

One of the most intelligent dinosaurs was Troodon. It was a hunting dinosaur, about 2 metres long, and had a brain size similar to that of a mammal or bird of today, stereoscopic vision, and grasping hands.

  14. Mary W

In 2010, researchers found the skull of a juvenile plant-eating dinosaur that suggested that some young dinosaurs had proportionally larger eyes and smaller, cuter faces than their parents.

  15. Danielle. R

The first dinosaur to be officially named was Megalosaurus in 1824!

  16. Q

Love the Strange New World set!

  17. Sarah Denham

According to Dinosaur Train, the Troodon is the smartest dinosaur as it has the largest brain.

  18. katty

The word dinosaur comes from the Greek language and means ‘terrible lizard’. The word was coined by English paleontologist Richard Owen in 1842 and was meant to refer to Dinosaurs impressive size rather than their scary appearance. :]

  19. David

For some reason the “brontosaurus” is not called that anymore….

  20. Laura

Sauroposeidon most likely was the tallest dinosaur, as tall as 18+ meters high. (Brachiosaurus was part of the same group of dinosaurs but was not as tall.)

    Loving Strange New World!

  21. Stephanie

The Stegosaurus was declared the state dinosaur of Colorado in 1982.

  22. Alejandro

Argentinosaurus is a genus of titanosaur sauropod dinosaur first discovered in Argentina. The dinosaur lived on the then-island continent of South America somewhere between 97 and 94 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous Epoch.

  23. David!!

Most dinosaurs lived to be more than a hundred years old!!!

  24. Sonya

The Dumbest Dinosaur was … The stegosaurus. It had a brain as big as a walnut in a body weighing nearly two tons.

  25. Jodie

Mammal like reptiles called Archosaurs, ruled millions of years before the Dinosaurs. The Dino’s are actual slips descendants of these creatures.

  26. Beth

The T-Rex was actually thought to be a very caring mother.

  27. Paleo-bot

Paleontologists use the pelvic bones (the ilium, ischium and pubis) to determine what kinds of dinosaur they found, Saurischian (lizard-hipped) or Ornithischian (bird-hipped). Ornithischian dinosaurs have hips that point backwards and include the Ankylosaurs and Stegosaurs. Saurischian dinosaurs have a pubis that points forwards and include the Apatosaurus and Tyrannosaurus.

It is actually the lizard-hipped (Saurischian) dinosaurs that evolved into birds!

  28. Tanya

Dinosaurs survived for more than 700,000 years after the earth was hit by a massive meteorite originally believed to have caused their extinction.

  29. Peter

Allosaurus regularly shed and replaced its teeth like modern crocodiles

  30. Shannon

When Tyrannosaurus rex hit around the age of 14 its body size would increase rapidly, putting on around 600kg (1300lb) a year over the next 4 years.

  31. Kathasaurus

Bruhathkayosaurus ( /bruːˌhæθkeɪ.ɵˈsɔrəs/; meaning “huge bodied lizard”) might have been the largest dinosaur that ever lived.

If the size estimates for Bruhathkayosaurus are accurate, the only other animal approaching its size would be the Blue Whale. Mature Blue Whales can reach 30 m (98 ft) in length,[8] which is a little shorter than Bruhathkayosaurus, but the record-holder Blue Whale weighed in at 176 tons,[9] which is probably heavier than Bruhathkayosaurus.

  32. Jess

Pterodactyls are not dinosaurs, but, rather, flying reptiles. BAM!

  33. Jessica R

Flying reptiles (pterosaurs) and swimming reptiles (ex: ichthyosaurs) weren’t technically dinosaurs. Some of them weren’t even very closely related to dinosaurs, besides the fact that they were all reptiles.

  34. Alec I

Velociraptors probably used their wings for stability, flapping to stay on top of its prey while hanging on with their hooked claws and eating it alive.

  35. KatR

One of the most intelligent dinosaurs was Troodon. It was a hunting dinosaur, about 2 metres long, and had a brain size similar to that of a mammal or bird of today, stereoscopic vision, and grasping hands.

  36. Devon

Have you ever noticed how dinosaur fossils all seem to have a dramatic pose in death?

A cord of springy tissue rather like a rubber band helps support the necks of most animals. This band, or ligament, can stretch to nearly twice its length when the neck is extended; it relaxes when the neck is in the neutral state. After an animal dies, the neck muscles slacken, the ligament shrinks and the neck straightens or bends back on itself.

This is why so many dinosaur fossils show the dinosaur with their neck arched back. Amazing!

  37. Brenna O

The name Carnotaurus means ‘meat eating bull’….eek! The name refers to the horns found above its eyes, which are similar to bull horns.

Dinosaurs are no longer around – fact

  39. Denise

    dinos are related to birds!

  40. Patricia Caradonna

Some land dinosaurs were found to have feathers.

  41. Andrea S

Pterodactylus was the first pterosaur ever to be discovered.

  42. Aaron

Birds today are descendants of dinosaurs, that’s why they were so fly!

  43. Karen

Most dinosaurs were thought to be digitigrades – or animals that walked primarily on their toes.

  44. Sharon Schoepe

Scientists believe Ornithomimus would have run as fast as its look-alike, the ostrich, which can exceed 40 miles per hour. Imagine trying to outrun that!

  45. Sarah glass

I believe I heard the T Rex was a scavenger not a hunter, that they eat meat but don’t kill it. Part of this new thought was based on their little arms. I hope I get this, I’m setting up my babies nursery.

  46. Mike

Dinosaurs constitute one of the most successful groups of terrestrial vertebrate animals ever to inhabit the Earth.

    :)

  47. Liz

The brontosaurus didn’t really exist, it was just a misclassification of the apatosaurus!

  48. Alison K

In 2006, the dinosaur Dracorex hogwartsia was discovered by three amateur paleontologists in South Dakota. They say the name means “dragon king of Hogwarts,” after the Harry Potter series.

  49. Laura

Although we typically think of carnivorous dinosaurs, some dinosaurs were vegetarians, which means that they abstained both from meat and from Quaker Dinosaur Eggs Oatmeal (okay, that last part is only a fact because it wasn’t invented yet).

  50. Jessica

The first dinosaur to be formally named was the Megalosaurus, back in 1824.

  51. Sharon W.

The two-legged Albertosaurus was first identified by fossils discovered in Canada.

  52. Aime

    Brontosaurus means “thunder lizard.”

  53. Lisa

The pet dinosaur on The Flintsones was named Dino (pronounced dee-no). A running gag in the series involves Dino knocking down Fred out of excitement and licking him repeatedly.

  54. Maggie

The heaviest dinosaur was Brachiosaurus at 80 tonnes. It was the equivalent to 17 African Elephants! Brachiosaurus was 16m tall and 26m long and is the largest dinosaur skeleton to be mounted in a museum.

The smallest dinosaur egg so far found is only 3cm long. It is not known what species it was from.

  55. Minji

    Most dinosaurs were vegetarians.

Giant predators like Tyrannosaurus Rex and Giganotosaurus get all the press, but it’s a fact of nature that the meat-eating “apex predators” of any given ecosystem are tiny in number compared to the plant-eating animals they prey on (which can rely on the vast amounts of vegetation needed to sustain such large populations).

  56. Karie

My kids would freak for these decals! Super cool :)

  57. Angel

awesome they look great. who doesnt love decals & dinosaurs. perfect match

  58. Nubia

Velociraptor weighed only about 30 pounds fully grown and grew to a height of only two or three feet!

  59. David

The Tyrannosaurus could not chew, so had to swallow its food whole. It could probably gulp up to 70 kilograms in one go.

  60. Alex

Even though O.C. Marsh originally named the dinosaur ‘Apatosaurus’ in 1877, he mistakenly thought that a later discovery was a different species that he called ‘Brontosaurus’. The mistake wasn’t discovered until over 30 years later, when the paleontologist Elmer Riggs realized the two skeletons represented the same species.
