No Atari game greater than Pac-Man! But Pitfall & Missile Command soaked up a lot of my time, too…
My favorite atari game of all time… which is still one of my favorite game regardless would be Ms. Pac-man. It’s much faster than Pac-man the classic. Also the name of the game is funny because I always think “Shouldn’t it be Ms. Pac-woman? Or is that Ms. Pac-man took Mr. Pac-man last name?”
My favorite games: it’s a tie between River Raid and Missile Command.
Space Invaders is the greatest Atari vodeogame. I used to stay up all night on the weekends with my parents and brother playing it on the Atari 800.
Asteroids!!!
Asteroids. Hands down.
Atari!!!!!By far the best game was Adventure. Especially when you used the dot to find the secret room. Watch out for those dragons!
Missile Command!
Remember BESERK??? What a crazy game. Also a big fan of FROGGER.
That one is a no-brainer… “Pit Fall” is the best!!!
My favorite Atari game has always been Megamania. You can’t help but love the fast-twitch gameplay that keeps coming and coming. Of course, Missile Command (with a trackball controller) is also awesome.
[...] just as much fun today. Or select an eBoy mouse pad featuring Tokyo Pixorama. For contest details: click here. Good [...]
My all time favorite Atari game is Circus Atari! It didn’t use the joystick, rather the controller with the dial on it! So much fun.
space invaders. my brother and i were at the liquor store with my dad in about 1980 and we found a wallet on the floor with over $300 cash in it. (all sounds very suspect.) we turned the wallet in and as a reward the wallet owner bought us atari. best karma EVER. played space invaders non stop.
Favorite Atari game was Pitfall…followed closely by Donkey Kong.
Oh god, Stampede. There was just something about the noise of moving the cowboy around and shooting out the lasso. Damn those cow skulls!
I never did get enough points to send in for the Trail Drive Activision patch. {old}
All time best Atari game? That’s a no-brainer: Adventure. In 1980, there was nothing scarier than running away from the red dragon, in desperate search for the spear. There were some urban legends attached to the game (like the developers hid some secret messages somewhere in level 3)and I spent hours hunting them down. I can still trace the path to the black castle in my head, after 30 years. Loved it.
I had a serious addiction to a game called Gyruss. Think Galaga + Tempest. It was beyond awesome.
Best of luck to everyone. This is a great contest.
Missel Command was my absolute favorite.
My all time favorite one game is asteroids. I could play it all the time and not get bored… If I only had the time.
PACMAN WAS DEFINITELY MY FAVORITE!
Frog Pond was my FAVE game to play on Atari……Miss the simple days!
So hard to choose! Frogger and Pitfall are strong contenders, but, I have to go with the Skiing game (called Skiing, of course) because I think playing that is my earliest video game memory.
My favorite ATARI game has to be a tie between the Smurf Adventure and Burmuda Triangle. And Pitfall. And Warlords.
Ms. PacMan is my absolute favorite atari game, but the lesser-known K Star Patrol is a very close second!
Asteroids. Definitely Asteroids. (Or maybe Combat….) Nah, Asteroids.
I love Moon Patrol. It was my only real chance at space travel.
My favorite Atari game has always been Space Invaders! I miss it!
In truth, I never owned an Atari. My parents were pretty diligent about keeping us outside and otherwise occupied. However, my friends all had the systems of the day…Atari, Colecovision and Intellivision. My favorite game, oddly it seems, was E.T. I guess it was more of a themed game…seemed like it maybe had more depth than a game like Asteroids, which would lose my interest rather quickly.
All time fav….space invaders. Atari games were the best. Going to the arcade as a child…what memories! Denel
Favourite Atari2600 game: Asteroids
Favourite Atari Game: Gauntlet
Why can’t you get wooden consoles anymore?
dude. . . I loved loved loved Pong! It was the only video game I could actually beat my cousin at. . .
I love the Journey game!
Centipede!!
I remember the days of switching between my Atari and my Commodore 64!! At 6 years old, I was the only one in the house who knew how to install a splitter.
Pong rules
Ice Breaker! Like frogger but on ice.
Would have to say that the idea of the Swordquest contest gamess on Atari were my favorites. I remember going over to a friends house at an early age to play Fireworld. We never got far in the game but the idea of possibly winning the Chalice of Light kept us entertained. We also played a lot of ET and Packman.
That’s a tough question. I’m going to have to go with Space Invaders. SALUTE to wooden paneled gaming consoles!!
I think my favorite atari game is pitfall. I love what they managed to do with such limited pixels and colors.
my friend had an atari game system and I loved playing the game with all the numbers falling on the creen. It gave you a math problem and you would have to click on the correct number answer. I cannot remember the name of teh game, but it was loads of fun for us 12 year olds.
My favorite old Atari game was “ADVENTURE”! It was lame to say the least, but I couldn’t help playing it. You had to search for a key, avoid really slow dragons, and retrieve something – I can’t quite remember! Of course, the classics cannot be ignored: Space Invaders, Asteroids…but I still remember loving Adventure above all
My favorite Atari game is the classic asteroids. I still wear my Atari t-shirt i bought in Seattle 13 years ago as a reminder of my childhood growing up in the SoCal suburbs playing asteroids with my friends. Now as a parent of 2 children (age 5 and 1), I hope to share that same excitement and fun with them.
Definitely Frogger!
Wow, the Atari days! We had a 2600 and spent HOURS playing those “simple” games (only simple by today’s standards!). One of my favorites was the James Bond Thunderball game. Well, that and who didn’t love Asteroids. Oh, and really, probably my favorite was Missle Command. The sounds from that game, and the thought of the speed of those darn missles still gets my heart pumping! Oh, to be a kid again!
just for us??? So unfair!
Adventure is of course, a classic, but my all time favorite is STAMPEDE! It’s hard, but soooooo fun!
i loved pong the most! I remember my rich cousins having atari and i thought it was the coolest thing ever. we would play pong for hours. great memories!!! I want to teach my boys to play pong so I can play along. I have a hard time getting into mario kart:-)
Joust! It had some great multiplayer fun.
My favorite game was Pitfall as well!
Asteroids, suckas!!!
I had a lot of favorites as a kid but I think jungle adventure is the one I remember playing most
. I really hope I win so I can play this with my little nephew and show him how it all started
Taz was a little-known Atari game but my favorite. You whisk the tasmanian devil all over the screen as he eats various types of food while looking like a whirling tornado. If he touches any of the flying dynamite he explodes.
I’ve gotta go with Adventure… and Strongbad would agree with me!
Pitfall! is the best game ever for the atari. I spent many hours as kid playing that game
Dodging cars and logs is a lot more fun when playing Frogger, than doing it in real life. Frogger, the game that started the hand-eye coordination for many of us.
Asteroids!!
Wow, this brings back memories… but I have to jump on the bandwagon and agree that Asteroids was amazing way back when. Still is, I suppose
Frogger!!!!!!!!!!!
Growing up we didn’t have an Atari in our house but our neighbors did so any chance I’d get I’d go over there place to play!
Hmm it’s so hard to narrow it down. My top 3 are definitely Congo Bongo, Haunted House, and Mountain King. I was partial to the big games like Pitfall, Space Invaders and PacMan too, but when it comes down to obsessive playing, it was those 3. So yeah, in hours I spent trying to catch that damn monkey and cursing crocodiles, it was definitely Congo Bongo.
I’m pretty sure that Asteroid is the only Atari game I ever beat as a kid, and it definitely gets the nod from me as the best game, if only for that reason.
I love Asteroids and Toobin’! Definitely my two favs.
Favorite was Pitfall!
Space invaders was my favorite, followed closely by Asteroids!
I used to be obsessed with Night Driver on the Atari 2600. I was only able to play it at my babysitters while mom and dad were at work, and only because they were kinda loaded and could afford it. It was the only way I could drive when I was too small to reach the pedals!
Definitely Pac-man
definitely the classic pac man.
Pac Man was my favorite!! I played it for hours.
Asteroids by far is the best game, I remember playing that with my dad when I was really young.
It’s really hard to pick just one, but I’d have to say Centipede.
asteroids!!!
my favorite was/is pac man!
PITFALL!!!!!
My favorite was Haunted House and even though it was Atari I was a little scared when I played.
Greatest Atari game ever was probably Pitfall or Pong
Frogger I played forever. That being said though, I also loved whatever game it was where you kept civilians from being beamed up by aliens. Sadly, I *cannot* for the life of me remember it’s name! Between that and Frogger (and missile command!) many many hours were lost
pitfall
I used to play centipede for hours on end as a kid, even though my parents had a ban on non-educational games in my house.
PAC-MAN!!! It was my first experience with any video game as a child. To this day I can still hear the sounds. Who knew the seeds that game would plant in my brain!?!
I’d have to say Turmoil because it was a fast shooter and I still play that today. I also played to death Space Master x-7, Stampede, Adventure, Fast Freddie, Megamania just to name a few…
No doubt it is Asteroids!
BMX Airmaster fo sho! My parents were completely against video games when I was around the age of 7 and the only time I got to play was when I went to my cousins house. BEST GAME EVA!
Definitely ATARI’s Asteroids!
My favorite Atari game of all time is “COMBAT”. It’s the first game I remember playing on Atari 2600 as a kid and it’s the first competitive 2 player game I ever played. My family & I had a blast(literally) playing it’s 27 game modes featured a variety of different combat scenarios, including tanks, biplanes, and jet fighters.
I still have the same Atari 2600 & Combat stored away for safe keeping and I’d love to win an Atari Flashback 2+ to play!
Used to play Outlaw at my friends house all the time. Loved that game
If it wasn’t on like Donkey Kong, then it was time for Q*bert.
My favorite atari game was and still is Adventure, that was the first game I ever glitched on. That is the time I became a gamer, now i am an old gamer LOL
My ultimate favorite Atari game would have to be Pitfall… spent many hours on that game… second would definitely be Pacman…how could you forget the Pacman that never changed directions when it ate the dots??? LOL Good times!
Asteroids hands down. I mean, who needs today’s fancy “three-dimensional shapes” or “texture”. Color is lame too.
I LOVED Pitfall……and of course some Frogger!!!!
Adventure ruled!
Pitfall by Activision! Remeber that one? Little “indiana Jones” type dude jumping on the alligator heads, swinging by the vines, exploring under ground! sweet music too!
My favorite Atari game would have to be a three way tie between Pacman, Pitfall and Qbert. Loved them all, so too hard to choose. I can tell you what my least favorite game is, though. Can anyone say Haunted House? If only the gameplay was half as good as the cover art…
I can’t believe I haven’t seen anyone mention Paperboy yet! I would have to say I have the fondest memories of playing that with my best friend when I was a kid!
definitely q*bert
I was a madman at Kaboom but most of my memories were from Frogger. I hated how nervous the splat sound made me when I died but me and my sisters were addicted. I think they won a few game to the end and sent in for Frogger and Enduro badges. I never won a game but I still have the packaging inserts for Frogger and Journey Escape. The receipt for Journey Escape was $2.13 from 7/15/85 (:
California Games all the way!
OMGZ what to choose, what to choose…
See on the one hand CLEARLY the best Atari game was Venture! Dungeon trolling much? Played that game forever.
But…
Surround on the practice setting with no time limit was my first ever computer graphics program. Sure, there was no output, and there was no save capacity, and sure the picture you could make was only something like 64 “pixels” across which produced images similar to electronic cross-stitch patterns (omg – pacghost afghan throw blanket – I’m on that!) … but it was awesome and I made designs for hours and it probably puts me on the edge of autism…
Venture.
Yeah, definitely Venture. Because when my mortal time limit is reached I hope a screaming, glowing demon skull swoops in to help me make a good exit.
Frogger and of course Paperboy!! I’m sure it was Saturday Superstore (BBC morning kids program) where callers dialled in to play Paperboy to get the highest score and win some prize, shouting left, right, throw down the phone……Anyone heard DJ Yoda “How to Cut and Past the 80′s Edition”…there’s an Atari commercial mixed in with Terence Trent D’Arby….classic….Have to play Atari Today!
Space Invaders or Missile Command! Although the new wall graphics make me want to play some Asteroids now
Space Invaders! Although the new wall graphics make me want to play some Asteroids now
E.T. is most definitely my favorite Atari game! And if not that, I would have to choose Space Invaders.
Frostbite–the polar bears were relentless!!
My favorite is Asteroids, the home edition was very much like the arcade one, which was a big thing back in the day!
After watching a group of med students play the original Pong coin-op game in the lounge at our local Med School in 1975 or so, I would have to choose Pong as my fav original Atari game! …..wow, I’ve been playing video games a looong time.
Have to pick 2…
Pitfall – we’d play the game and then set up a ‘pitfall arena’ in the basement complete with ropes and alligator pits..
and…
Combat – classic multi-player fighter – and a good idea for a blik graphic.
Pitfall was (and still is) the cat’s pajamas!
I also loved Haunted House.. it was a little bit hokey, but then again I LOVED Scooby Doo as well.. with all the “scary” stuff… I guess I was/am just a little dorky.
Cosmic Ark or Defender. Demons 2 Diamonds for best 2-player game
While Video Olympics was my first game after Combat (aka, uber pong), my favorite 2600 game to this day remains Adventure.
Followed by Laser Blast (Favorite Activision game)
Only three votes for Combat?! If you had a sibling or buddy and a rainy day you were guaranteed a virtually endless set of options for blowing one another up. The bumper-pool tank levels were my personal favorites, but there were so many options that the game never got dull, even after a seriously long string of battles. We used to play tennis matches.
I set up a Bolo server for a while on an old Mac Mini just so I could relive the glory that was Combat.
Honorable mentions to Adventure, Asteroids, and Soccer on the 5200.
Wow…Pitfall, Frogger, and Space Invaders. Can’t choose just one!
AsTeRoIdS!
so many to choose from…hmmm…i think it’s a tie for me between space invaders and pacman…and frogger gets a mention too!!
I remember Frogger and asteroids the most. I would have to say Frogger was my favorite because I could beat my older brothers score everytime!!
Asteroids – Simply the most definitive game of it’s time
Pitfall~!!!…..gave me nightmares
Pitfall was the best !!!
Pitfall hands down!
The very first time I played Atari, I played Frogger and I was forever hooked!!! It was the very first gaming system that I bought for my son…well I said it was for him…lol
My favorite Atari game was Donkey Kong Jr. because one day it had an error where there were no enemies and i broke every record due to game failure. I rocked for a day. It was rad.
My sister and I were obsessed with Frogger. I sucked at it, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it. My sister, on the other hand, was a Frogger master. I would watch her play and not even flinch when she almost got hit by a car. It got to a point where I was so frustrated with her that I’d try to mess her up, but that never worked because she’d just smack me and I’d stop. Good times with Frogger.
For me the best Atari 2600 game that was published by Atari has to be Yars Revenge. Fast, fun and totally original. The best game ever made on the machine is definately Activision’s Kaboom. Even on a machine with ‘modern’ graphics, the game couldn’t play any better!
It’s a tough call, but probably Pitfall is the favorite. But then there’s Moon Patrol. And Frogger.
Pacman, for sure!
God, there are so many games I love but my all time favorite is CENTIPEDE.
The great memories it brings back to me of my childhood, going to the arcade with my parents and then having marathon games at home with my parents.
To this day I still love playing the game and introducing friends/people to the pleasures of the old games I loved as a child.
asteroids! I remember watching my dad play it and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. thus began my video game infused youth
Star Raiders. The fact it hasn’t been mentioned yet is a travesty.
Pac-man! pac pac pac pac pac….
Lunar Lander is incredible, especially if you get a chance to play the real arcade machine. If you’ve played it on a keyboard without an analog thrust stick, you haven’t played it at all. Warlords comes in at a close second.
Good luck everyone. I hope this post finally makes it in the comments. My favorite game was KABOOM!
p..a..c..m..a..n
Combat
the greatest tank game ever
It has to be Combat on the Atari 2600. All the game variations on that cartridge (tanks to planes, straight shots to ricochets, etc.) gave me and my brother hours and hours of gameplay.
On a side note, (and this may disqualify me lol) I actually enjoyed E.T. I know it wasn’t all that great, but there was a challenging game in there and I played it for hours on end always trying to get a better score.
FAVORITE WAS PAC MAN AND GALAGA!
ignore previous, pressed enter too quickly ( bit excited)
so…..
Pong!
I’m tempted to say no more but my girlfriend and i actually frequent a yearly pong championship in Belfast. Truly the best game ever.
My favorite 2600 game was H.E.R.O. Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operation. You had a little propeller on your back and a laser in your helmet and you floated down into mines saving miners.
It was a later entry by Activision. Many of the later games were excellent: Pitfall 2 Lost Caverns, Crystal Castles, Montezuma’s Revenge, Road Runner and Beamrider come to mind. Oh and Ms Pac Man was awesome. And Dragonfire.
FROGGER!!!!! I LOVE that game!
my favorite games ever were Q-Bert & Journey Escape (the game about the 80s band)!!!!
Pitfall, ftw!
Best game of all time? It’s one that nobody ever mentions, but they all remember it when they see a screen shot: “KABOOM!” One of the best games using the incredible technological advancement of the “paddle joystick.” Just solid, basic, addicting stuff.
Other honorable mentions: PITFALL, DEFENDER, TANK, and the original FOOTBALL (just stupid when you play it now…but back in the day? Awesome!)
We really want to buy the Atari wall art stickers and we live in Australia. Can you help us?
