September was Adornment Month at Apartment Therapy and we were fortunate enough to be invited to join them in the celebration! We all thought it would be great to run a competition to see what the real interior designers out there - you - could do with blik. So, the AT team put out a nationwide call to everyone and anyone who wanted some blik! The catch? Contestants had to explain how desperately they needed some inspired décor, and they had to think outside the box with their designs, documenting their newly blik'd out space with hi-res photos.
3 regional semi-finalists each from ATLA, ATSF, ATNYC and ATCHI were chosen from 100s of applicants. All 12 were given 3 packages of blik of their choosing*. Now we are proud to reveal the 3 lucky cash prize winners! The decision was so tough, we couldn't help but include an honorable mention.
*Designs to choose from were: Fly, Flock, Mod, Iron Vines, Chandelier, Bamboo

Designs: FLOCK/Midnite; IRON VINES/Midnite; CHANDELIER/Black
We loved that Tennille used 3 different blik patterns and pulled out all the creative stops. Check out how she not only played Iron Vines off the ornate design of her lamp shade, but also used them to spruce up her white furniture. She even constructed a pattern with Flock we haven't seen before. And we never even thought to use Chandelier on tile. Great interior designing all showcased in some fab photography.
Here was Tennille's story, might sound familiar to some of you:
"I've just moved into a fun studio in an interesting space with one wall that is part brick and I've painted the rest of it yellow. Unfortunately, the yellow wall is hard as nails which means that unless I invest in a proper drill I'm stuck with one wall that can't be adorned with pictures, but would look amazing with one of these graphics on it. You can see the room in progress here."

Designs: FLY/Sky; 2x FLY/Gray Midnite
Jessica tells a lyrical tale with her blik and photography. She and her family thought to start their design outside, creating a sense of movement the suggests blik Fly are coming home. We love the image of Dad finishing up the job while his son sleeps - shows just how easy application can be! The photo journal tells a complete story, from Jessica's little boy "mocking up" with a Fly decal, to the proud son standing in front of his completed bedroom creation.
Here is a snippet of Jessica's story - we love her sentiment about bringing energy to a room!
"I would so very much love the Fly decals for my 2.5-year-old son's room! They'd be a great jump start to my Fall Cure, in which I plan to once again treat my surroundings as a path to a more enlightened inner reality. I want to get back to feeling like my home really reflects the inner life of its inhabitants. Once we had our son, I felt intensely the memory of just how important it is to have magical, special surroundings that can jolt one out of our everyday whatever and into a somewhat altered reality, especially for a little one still half in the clouds. SO... My Big Plans for those fabulous Blik decals. My son's only window looks out onto a...wall? UGH! Wouldn't it be so lovely if there was a flock of birds flying in along the outside wall just outside his door... then into the room, under his window, and across the other side? And what if, when the (to-be-purchased-more-suitable) curtain/shade was drawn back from said window, one could spot newly-revealed members of that same flock of birds flying across the wall that blocks the window, winging across either a blue or sunset-orange sky rather than just seeing a ratty white wall? Mmm-hmmmm. I especially love this idea since my little one is currently quite taken with the lovely Elizabeth Mitchell song 'Little Bird, Little Bird' in which all sorts of birds fly in through a window. But in addition to the aesthetic side of this, just having a constant reminder of quiet, open skies seems to me a fantastic counterpoint to the frequently chaotic inner energy of a toddler."

Designs: 2x BAMBOO/Tan; FLY/Gray Midnite
Again, we love that Jenny and her boyfriend tell a story. They knew they wanted to cover their open closets and blik became part of the plan. We were impressed by the pre-production sketch and that they weren't afraid to use blik on a wooden canvas - nice mixed mediums! We also like that they flipped one of the Fly birds to incorporate it as a seal in their wallscape. Great photo quality and 360 photo journal.
Here is a bit of a tale of 2 college students striving for peace:
"We are Jenny & Jafe, and we are both college students. The fall semester just started, and that can only mean one thing: we're (kinda) moving back to school. At the end of a hard day's work (usually around 2am), nothing feels better than to come home to a calm, serene bedroom, relax, and drift off to sleep. Improving the overall ambiance of the bedroom is a top priority for the two of us right now as we would really like a sanctuary from the pressures of school. There is currently one Ikea Billy bookcase on the wall next to the window. We will be purchasing another one to place on the opposite side of the window. The bamboo decals will go on plywood doors for the bookcases, painted dark chocolate to contrast with the tan bamboo. A large panel of MDF, painted in seafoam blue, will hang over the bed. A couple of the fly decals will go on the painted panel, a couple will fly off onto the wall beside it, one will go on the bookcases with the bamboo, and finally, one will rest on the glass of the window We are so eager to start this project (it's definitely doable as a weekend undertaking) and transform our bedroom into a nice place to come home to..."

Honorable Mention: K, ATC Designs: MOD/Midnite; MOD/Sky; MOD/Tangerine
A blik shout-out to K! We loved the quality of your photos and that you included photography of the application process. Your design illustrates how even the simplicity of large dots can infuse visual interest into a space. Thank you, K!
For all you renters out there, K's saga might sound familiar! Glad we can help.
"Our apartment is the top floor of an 1890's house; previous tenants used some wretched paint (still visible from certain angles) and our landlord has outlawed our *totally reasonable* color choices to ban painting altogether. Our walls are made of some spongy material that either loosely holds nails or rejects them altogether. As a result, our apartment walls are mostly bare and/or full of attempted holes. Here's my blog if you'd like some context. We just renewed our lease for another year and we'd love to update our place with something that won't get us kicked out or require spackle. What say you?"
